Biography
Shira Michel is a PhD student in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based at the Roux Institute in Portland. She is advised by Mahsan Nourani and Christo Wilson.
Michel began her PhD in 2023, drawn by Khoury College’s emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration within and beyond the institution. She works to uncover how cognitive biases manifest during people’s interactions with large language models, then uses those insights to inform the design of better systems. Michel is excited by the ways that the interdisciplinary nature of her work encourages her to consider its broader societal implications. She is a recipient of the Khoury Distinguished Fellowship and presented her work at FAccT 2025.
In her free time, Michel enjoys doing Pilates, cooking and baking, and taking care of her growing plant collection.
