Biography

Lucy Havens is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based at the Roux Institute in Portland.

Building on her prior research demonstrating the dynamic, contextual, and inevitable nature of bias, Havens’ postdoc focuses on AI and data literacy. Grounding her research in feminist theorizing, she is particularly interested in improving AI evaluation practices to better reflect the omissions and uncertainties that are inevitable in all data-driven systems. She is excited to apply human–computer interaction methods to study and develop interventions for improving the public’s understanding of AI.

Before joining Khoury College in 2025, Havens held a postdoctoral research position in the University of Maryland’s INFO College, where she provided responsible AI and data science expertise for a project investigating applications of AI chatbots to archival workflows. Before that, she provided computational and design services as a freelance researcher and consultant. Her previous research earned an honorable mention at CHI 2025 and was shortlisted for the Digital Humanities Awards; it has also been presented at DH, DHC, ACH, and the Workshop on Gender Bias in Natural Language Processing, among others.

In her free time, Havens can be found running, cooking, drawing, playing piano, or most often, reading.
