Biography

Mark Miller is a part-time lecturer at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Silicon Valley, dedicated to making computer science accessible to students in the Align program.

Miller’s career is marked by significant contributions to educational technology and AI. He is the founder and president of Learningtech.org, a nonprofit dedicated to helping learners use technology more effectively. Previously, he served as Lab Director for Learning & Tools at Apple’s Advanced Technology Group, where he oversaw major educational initiatives and managed a team of over 36 employees. He also founded the Machine Intelligence Research Program at Texas Instruments’ Central Research Labs, and later co-founded Computer*Thought Corporation, a high-tech spinoff.

A direct contributor to the development of the Logo programming language, Dr. Miller helped write its LISP implementation and coded the “Music Box” designed by Marvin Minsky. His work in early AI and education includes contributions to systems like SCHOLAR. Along with other Logo pioneers, he co-authored the comprehensive History of Logo article (ACM SIGPLAN, 2020), emphasizing the language’s philosophical role in teaching children. He is also an Emeritus Leader of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) Silicon Valley chapter and a strong advocate for K–12 CS education equity in California.

Outside of work, Miller enjoys music, chess, martial arts, spoiling his grandson, and global travel with his wife of 56 years.
