Biography

Woodward (Buz) Galbraith is a PhD student in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Boston. They are advised by Benjamin Gyori

Galbraith discovered their interest in knowledge graphs and graphical models in 2023, while helping to construct a large-scale, multimodal knowledge graph of cancer patient health records to train multi-task inference models at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Invigorated to discover how computational approaches can reveal insights into biology and medicine, Galbraith developed a pipeline to identify highly conserved regions in human mRNA before becoming a machine learning engineer at the Kaiser Permanente, where they developed practical insight into scaling computational tools.

Galbraith joined Khoury College in 2025 to pursue a PhD in computational biology and data science, drawn by the program’s interdisciplinary focus. They are developing methods of integrating large-scale data from diverse sources to automatically model and analyze experimental results, with a focus on molecular pathway analysis in the context of cancer. They enjoy the way their field balances complex and novel computational methods with impactful and grounded applications.

In their free time, Galbraith enjoys running, exploring new coffee shops, and playing video games.
