Biography

Hang Jiang is an assistant professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, based in Boston.

Jiang’s work takes an interdisciplinary approach to a core question: How can AI systems foster a healthy, connected, pluralistic society? By weaving computational methods from machine learning and natural language processing together with perspectives from the social, cognitive, and design sciences, he explores how AI agents interact with individuals and groups, and how those interactions shape people’s beliefs and behaviors. Jiang has always been interested in the ways language can sow division or build understanding, and he hopes his work will contribute to the design of human-scale AI systems that reduce polarization and connect communities.

Before joining Khoury College in 2026, Jiang worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the MIT–IBM Watson AI Lab. He has also held research positions at the Allen Institute for AI, Google Research, IBM Research, Apple, and the Educational Testing Service. Jiang’s work has appeared in such conferences as ACL, NAACL, CHI, CSCW, and MLHC, as well as interdisciplinary journals such as JAMIA and Cognitive Science. He also co-authored “AI Wars,” an award-winning case study produced by the Harvard Business School that examines strategic and organizational challenges surrounding AI adoption.

In his free time, Jiang enjoys traveling; playing tennis, table tennis, and golf; wine tasting; and cheering on the Boston Celtics and Real Madrid.
