Biography
Eugene Jang is a PhD student in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Boston. He is advised by Terra Blevins.
Jang focuses on improving large language model (LLM) architectures to promote multilingual understanding. He became interested in the topic while working in industry, where he saw many capable LLMs make unexpected mistakes while using Korean. Jang joined Khoury College in 2025, eager to investigate the fundamental issues that hamper LLMs’ acquisition of certain languages.
Before joining Khoury College, Jang served as a senior researcher at the Korean startup S2W Inc., where he applied natural language processing and machine learning methods to the detection and analysis of cybercrime. He has published work in EMNLP, NAACL, Findings, and ACL.
Outside of his studies, Jang loves to play metal music on guitar and is very passionate about good coffee.
