Biography

David Ayman Shamma is a professor of the practice and campus director at Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern's Oakland campus. He has coauthored more than 200 academic publications and holds more than 100 patents, and his work has received international attention from outlets including the New York Times, Wired, CNN, and Engadget.

Before joining Northeastern, Shamma accrued 20 years of industry research experience, working on AI-powered editorial tools at Yahoo, entertainment systems at CWI, AI-enhanced conference room technology at FXPAL, and sustainability applications at Toyota. He brings that breadth of applied experience to his teaching, which has spanned design and new media, AI, journalism, and data visualization.

A distinguished member of the ACM, Shamma has served on the ACM CHI Steering Committee and held technical program chair and general chair roles at multiple ACM SIGCHI and ACM MM conferences. He cochaired CHI 2026 in Barcelona, where attendance exceeded 5,300 — a record for the conference.
