Sandbox

Sandbox is Northeastern’s student-led software consultancy, which builds software for researchers, nonprofits, and the Northeastern community.

Sandbox’s cross-functional teams of student developers, UI/UX designers, and brand designers create impactful software projects such as the SearchNEU course finder/registration tool and the GraduateNU degree audit planner. In the past, the club has also taken on projects for Boston communities, such as MFA Forms, a digital paperwork management system for Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.

As of Fall 2026, our project slate consists of SearchNEU (a search engine that lets you easily look up course offerings at Northeastern), PlanNEU (a course scheduling tool), GraduateNU (a degree audit planner), Sarge (a platform that manage candidates for recruiting), Pyret (a team working to extend the Pyret language and tooling), NASA Project (a citizen science platform for hazard and disaster data collection), and two internal projects. We also have a brand project team that promotes Sandbox through our Instagram, merch, club branding, and more. 

By working on a project team, Sandbox members build valuable skills such as web development, full-stack programming, cross-functional team collaboration, project management, and leadership. The group also supports a vibrant social community, hosting regular social events with other Khoury organizations and internally within the club.

Prospective clients can apply to have Sandbox build them a website or software product at no cost.

Sandbox has given me not just the support I need to learn new technologies and work as a team; it has given me a space where I can discover my voice and my place within the Northeastern community
