Data Are Made, Not Found: A discussion with author danah boyd (Boston)
September 29 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm EDT
What does it take to produce the data on which American democracy depends? Drawing on her ethnography of the 2020 US Census, danah boyd reveals how civil servants navigated a pandemic, political pressure, incomplete participation, fabricated responses, and competing demands for access and confidentiality. Data Are Made, Not Found shows that census data do not simply reflect the nation — they are painstakingly constructed within an increasingly precarious administrative state.
