Biography
HwiJoon Lee is a PhD student in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Boston. He is advised by Saiph Savage.
Lee is most passionate about making complex systems intuitive and accessible so as many people as possible can enjoy the joys and conveniences of new technologies. He saw the incredible acceleration of AI firsthand during his mandatory military service for the Republic of Korea, which is when he realized that his true passion was not for developing technology, but for bridging the gap between its powerful capabilities and its users. He then turned his attention towards human-computer interaction (HCI) and has deeply enjoyed exploring the human side of technical problems.
After graduating from Northeastern with a bachelor’s in computer science, Lee spent time as a visiting researcher at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, where he designed interactive tools that help users explore and experiment with multi-agent social simulations. He also did backend development for a data analytics platform at PS Analytics before returning to Northeastern in 2025 to pursue his PhD.
In his free time, Lee is a passionate video gamer who enjoys doing his own game data or system analysis to find insights that could help new players learn complex games.
