Inclusion in Beauty: A Data-Driven Approach to Measuring Diversity in Foundation Shades

This project uses data science and statistics as a means of unraveling the narrative of people of color’s experiences in the beauty industry and the lack of inclusion in it. Using technology bridge the gap in the market, Pathrose and Leemon built a product that uses machine learning to match a user to a foundation that best caters to their unique complexion and needs.

Presenter(s):

  • Christina Pathrose, Khoury ’22, Computer Science
  • Gaea Leemon, CSSH’22, Economics

Faculty Mentor: Independently Produced Project

Husky Sort

HuskySort is an improved approach to sorting that reduces the number of expensive comparisons in the linearithmic phase by substituting inexpensive comparisons. The researchers demonstrated that a combination of these two algorithms with hashing can run significantly faster than either algorithm alone for the two types of objects with expensive comparisons

Presenter(s):

  • Sai Vineeth Kandappa Reddi Gari, MS’21, Information Systems

Faculty Mentor: Robin Hillyard, COE, Computer Science; Alumni Co-Presenter, Yunlu Liaozheng, MS’20, Computer System Engineering

member of the Husky Sort project

Chrysalis: Adaptive Physical Rehabilitation in Extended Reality (XR)

Chrysalis is an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience that provides patients with guided instruction of standard physical rehab protocols during their rehabilitation journeys. Each patient’s movement is tracked and reconstructed in the virtual environment via a virtual avatar; motion data is collected from each training session to aid in analysis of each patient’s progress.

Presenter(s):

  • Haleigh Whitlock, MS’21, Bioengineering
  • Nathan Miner, MS’21, Game Design
  • Jason Miller, MS’21, Computer Science

Monte Carlo Simulation of Phase Equilibria in Pentadecanoic Acid Monolayers

Monolayers are found everywhere in chemistry and biology. Duffy investigated monolayer phase properties using Monte Carlo computer simulations to better understand their structure and educate further insight and applications.

Building a Digital Archive of Historical Cherokee Manuscripts

Snead built a lexical database of Cherokee words recorded in the past 200 years from vocabularies, grammars, and dictionaries. They also built a website to present historical Cherokee manuscripts, their translation, and a word-by-word analysis that connects to the lexical database, which contextualizes the writing in the history of the Cherokee language. This effort represents progress for language preservation and will be integrated into Cherokee language learning curricula.

Presenter(s):

  • Taylor Snead, Khoury ’21, Computer Science

Faculty Mentor: Ellen Cushman, CSSH, English

member of the Building a Digital Archive of Historical Cherokee Manuscripts project

ConsciousCart

ConsciousCart was created to make consumers aware of sustainable & ethical brands and encourage purchasing from those brands when online shopping. The project aims to influence consumer behavior change through an online brand directory, blog articles, and a browser extension. Ultimately, the goal is that this consumer behavior change will influence companies to adopt more ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.
