Bio:
Steve Shafer is a part-time lecturer in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Seattle.
After retiring from industry in the spring of 2023, Shafer joined Khoury College in the fall to teach in the Align program. He had worked in software for Swisslog Healthcare, Visible Brands, and Microsoft, and was also an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He was excited to return to the classroom because he loves seeing his students grow in capability and enthusiasm.
Shafer strives to share his perspective from his years in industry, and believes that it is early in his students’ journeys that such perspective is most influential and helpful. As such, he tends to teach introductory courses for Align students, such as “Intensive Foundations of Computer Science” and “Discrete Structures.”
In his free time, Shafer enjoys spending time with his wife, twin daughters, and dog. He also likes card, board, and role-playing games.
