Minor in Data Science
The minor in data science gives students the foundational knowledge to understand and manage data in any field. You’ll study the collection, manipulation, storage, retrieval, and computational analysis of data in its various forms, including numeric, textual, image, and video data from small to large volumes. The minor consists of five courses—from data visualization to database design—that will help you gain proficiency while easily fitting around your major requirements. - CS 2500 Fundamentals 1 – Introduces computing and programming, the principles of systematic problem solving through programming, and the basic rules of computation.
- CS 2510 Fundamentals 2 – Focuses on class-based program design and the design of abstractions that support the design of reusable software and libraries.
DS minors can take the above two courses OR:
- DS 2000 Programming with Data – Introduces programming for data and information science through cross-disciplinary case studies and key concepts in programming, data structures, and data analysis through Python.
- DS 2500 Intermediate Programming with Data – Offers intermediate to advanced Python programming for data science, including topics such as object-oriented design patterns and software architecture, recursion, profiling, unit testing and debugging, lineage and data provenance.
By attending class with Khoury majors—approximately one-third of whom are also new to programming—you’ll develop your knowledge base while engaging with Khoury’s diverse community. Many non-major students decide to pursue CS or DS as a discipline and transition into a Khoury combined major after completing introductory courses.
