Khoury has equipped remote and in-person faculty with a variety of technologies for effective teaching. This includes: tablets, high-quality mics and cameras, and a variety of software products (e.g., a custom office-hour management platform and audio/video recording/editing).
Over the last several months, Khoury has developed course-specific plans to effectively use in-person class time and online learning; this includes interactive lectures, partially flipped recorded lectures with hybrid labs/recitations, as well as fully asynchronous options for students attending across the globe. For example, CS1800 (Discrete Structures) has high-quality recorded lectures, with on-ground opportunities for small-group, problem-solving seminars (CS1802). CS2500 (Fundamentals of Computer Science 1) has in-person lectures paired with synchronous online labs (CS2501). Both of these foundational courses also offer fully asynchronous, online options, particularly for students that can’t reasonably travel to Boston.
Continuing the Khoury tradition of team-based learning and working, many of our project courses incorporate structured opportunities for group work that are safe and effective, such as desktop-shared pair programming in our introductory software-development sequence.

The Khoury College undergraduate advising team is currently operating remotely and meeting with students for virtual appointments. Advisors are a great resource for students who may have concerns about their courses or need help with academic skills. Advisors can also work individually with students to build a personalized plan of study.
We invite students to schedule an appointment via the advising portal or attend drop-in hours, which are available daily. This semester we have a new feature in the portal that allows students to check in for their appointment virtually, which mimics the kiosk that we have at the front desk in our office. Our goal is to make our virtual appointments with students as welcoming and stress-free as we can.
Later this month, Northeastern classes will be posted for the Spring 2021 term, and students can start planning their schedules. Registration week is November 16-20th, and students should be sure to check their accounts for holds in order to build a few schedule options. Advisors are also hosting events in October to help students explore the various majors Khoury offers.
This past summer we developed a Canvas page for students that includes several academic resources including a guide to preparing for registration, understanding the degree audit, academic policies and more. Together, the undergraduate advisors have been creatively exploring and implementing new ways to reach out and stay connected with our students!

Dear Parents,
‘Back to school’ means something different this fall, and yet it is wonderful to be in the semester’s full swing. I love my roles as dean, scholar, professor, and parent. Indeed, our youngest son is in his last year at Northeastern as a combined major in Khoury.
With the majority of our student body back on campus and part joining us virtually, my own life as dean is divided by these two experiences. Some days, I take advantage of a quiet office on campus and use it for socially-distanced, sustained work time. Other days, I meet colleagues and students via Zoom or Teams calls from my desk at home. When I am in the office, I make a special point to try to talk to the students that I see in the hallways, and sometimes I visit a recitation to say hi as well – my favorite part of being a dean is your children!
During this unprecedented time, Northeastern has risen to many challenges, creating a safe, vibrant, academically rich, and technology enabled environment for all of us: faculty, staff, and students. The planning, collaboration, and implementation to get us to this point has been phenomenal.
Every day we (safely) reap the benefits. Students are fully engaged in a mix of online and in-person learning experiences. Advisors and co-op faculty bolster classroom learning with guidance, relevant speakers and events, and job-related programming.
Thank you for trusting your student to Khoury College of Computer Sciences! To learn along with them, I invite you to participate in our parents’ community and stay connected. The best way to start is by bookmarking our new web page for Khoury parents. We’ll use the page to keep you informed of upcoming events and news highlights. I also encourage you to sign up for our monthly newsletter by filling out the form at the bottom of this page.
I hope you will develop a meaningful connection to Khoury College, one that resonates with your students’ experience at Khoury, which is both rigorous and supportive. Please, stay in touch!
Sincerely,
Carla Brodley

While COVID-19 caused a lot of uncertainties, we were able to quickly pivot and move all of our events to a virtual format. Not only has this shift been extremely successful, it has allowed access to events across multiple campuses, providing more opportunities for all of our students to attend any event that interests them, regardless of where they are located. This shift has had a wonderfully positive impact on our Khoury community, allowing us to be more together (virtually) than ever before.
