Xinyu Hua is a PhD student in the Natural Language Processing program at Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences, advised by Professor Lu Wang. A native of China, Xinyu is a graduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Xinyu’s research focuses include text summarization, language generation and information retrieval. His research areas include artificial intelligence and natural language processing.
What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
So far I’ve been working on literature review in text summarization and language generation. I am in the process of implementing some of the existing state-of-the-art systems.
What are your research interests?
My research interests include Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval. Specifically, I am focusing on text summarization and knowledge representation, partly because of the growing needs for condensing large collections of documents, partly because of my undergraduate experience on knowledge extraction.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
How to apply machine learning techniques such as long short-term memory (LSTM) to generate both informative and concise text summaries that resembles summaries written by human beings.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting?
The most interesting part is there is no single “right answer” for text summarization, which indicates the possibility for machines to create and innovate. I think the most impressive part of text summarization is the flexibility that language machines could employ, contrary to the intuition that machines do not have or could make little use of common sense and real world knowledge that human writers largely rely on.
What are your research or career goals, going forward?
My plan is to finish my PhD and then work in both academia and industrial research labs.
