Usama Fayyad is the inaugural Executive Director of the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence at Northeastern University and a Professor of Computer Science at Khoury College of Computer Sciences. His research interests include data mining, knowledge discovery in databases, data analysis, exploration & visualization of large dimensional spaces and massive data sets. He also is interested in applications of data mining in business, science, and government.
He is currently a member of the Applied Machine Learning Group as well as the International Systems Security Laboratory. He has organized committees of many major conferences in data science, data mining, AI, and machine learning. He has also chaired many conferences in KDD, data science, and data mining, and has chaired many panels and workshops. He was recently published in Harvard Data Science Review and Communications of the ACM.
He has received multiple awards through his career, such as the ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award (2007), as well as the Lew Allen Award for Research Excellence, which is the highest honor Caltech bestows on JPL researchers. He also served as a fellow of both ACM SIGKDD Service Awards and the Association for Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. He has also received a U.S. Government Medal from NASA for outstanding contributions to machine learning for data analysis.
