About Me

  • Hometown: Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
  • Field of Study: Computer Science
  • PhD Advisor: Ehsan Elhamifar

Dat Huynh is a PhD student in the Computer Science program at Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences, advised by Professor Ehsan Elhamifar. Originally from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, Huynh earned his bachelor’s degree from the Ho Chi Minh University of Science. His research is dedicated to unsupervised machine learning – or the task of inferring patterns in uncategorized data. Huynh is particularly interested in the mathematical part of computer science research. He hopes to increase the transparency of machine learning research by combining linear and non-linear methods of machine learning.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?

I am studying PhD in Computer Science under Professor Ehsan Elhamifar’s guidance.

What are your research interests?

My research is about machine learning in unsupervised setting. In other words, the task is to infer structures/patterns in data, which often lies in high dimensions. Human mind can only scope with at most three dimension thus these techniques would provide insights into daily complex signal around us.

What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?

My goal is to combine linear and non-linear methods to make learning process transparent. Non-linear methods is flexible and powerful but not easy for interpretation. Linear methods, on the other hand, has many well developed techniques and understanding at the cost of being too ideal for real world.

What aspect of what you do is most interesting?

The mathematical part of my research always keeps me intrigued. For me, math is the way of life because of its morality. Only the truth is accepted. And when you try to deceive the truth, it will eventually come to a contradiction.

What are your research or career goals, going forward?

I would like to become a scientist whether it means to be a professor, a researcher or an entrepreneur.

Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?

I grew up in Ho Chi Minh, which is also called Saigon. I was a hyperactive, mischievous kid (probably now as well). I am always grateful of my parents and teachers who shape me into who I am.

Where did you study for your undergraduate degree?

I did my bachelor at Ho Chi Minh University of Science. I was inspired by Prof Vu Duong who always reminds his student to think deeply but not shallowly.
