About Me


Alesia Chernikova is a PhD student in the computer science program at Northeastern University, advised by Professors Cristina Nita-Rotaru and Alina Oprea. Alesia’s research is focused on building machine learning algorithms that are resilient to adversarial manipulation. Prior to joining Khoury, Alesia earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Belarusian State University.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?

I’m a first year PhD student working in the field of adversarial machine learning.

What are your research interests?

I became interested in data science and machine learning algorithms while working on a research project where I designed clustering algorithms for ranking the national enterprises during my undergraduate years in BSU. Later I found it interesting to expand and apply my knowledge in the sphere of adversarial machine learning, where I can build algorithms that are resilient against adversarial perturbation.

What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?

I would like to create a defense algorithm that is robust to wide range of attacks while remaining rigorous and precise about the type of security guarantee it provides.

What aspect of what you do is most interesting?

There exists a number of machine learning algorithms that provide state-of-art results for a variety of machine learning problems. However, they remain vulnerable to different types of attacks, and it limits the domains where they can be applied. It is crucial to understand the security properties of machine learning algorithms.

What are your research or career goals, going forward?

I would like to earn a position in academia.

Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?

During my PhD years I would like to become a good researcher and a person, who can look at the known problems from a novel perspective. After pursuing the PhD I would like to start my career in the industry research lab.
