What Does this Program Accomplish for My Company?
Brush Up Your Skills pairs students searching for co-op with employers who would like to host practice interview sessions. This is an opportunity for employers to get a jump start on meeting with co-op seekers and to put a face with the name on the resume. Students participate in this program to practice their interview skills and get to know, and network with, co-op employers. By helping students prepare for the behavioral and technical interview processes, employers showcase their investment in co-op students and programs – which students notice!
This is a great opportunity for employers to:
- build a strong brand on campus
- increase visibility and generate interest in their co-op roles
- support Khoury students in their search
As a participant, you will be able to select a date and time that works for you and we will promote it to all Khoury undergraduate students searching for a co-op job. Sound easy? We sure hope so. All sessions will be held online.
Who Can I Expect to Meet?
Khoury undergraduate students: a mix of first-time co-op job seekers and students who have previously been on co-op.
What Does a Brush Up Your Skills Technical Interview Session Look Like?
Students sign up for sessions with employers. The size of the session will be determined by the type of session the employer is holding. For example, an actual mock technical interview will be best for a small group (no more than 10 students) to provide students the opportunity for hands-on practice and participation. An informational session on how to approach a technical interview might not need a cap on attendees. You choose the focus: software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, gaming, or a specific technology that you identify as important for students to know for the interview process. Sessions are typically an hour in length but can be adjusted as the employer feels necessary. Our Khoury Co-op team will be able to help you with the planning of your session.
Before and during the interview:
- Employer participants prepare technical interview questions in advance to use during the session. Typically, they ask students to work through a problem in real time. Where would they start/ask qualifying questions? How can they prepare before the interview? What do they do if they get stuck? What qualities can students showcase during a technical interview?
- Employers are encouraged to provide feedback and offer tips for preparation for future interviews to students joining the practice session.
- Individuals comfortable conducting a technical interview, discussing technical topics, and answering questions as well as providing feedback to students are a good fit for this experience.

Students sign up for a 1:1 session with a company representative to practice common behavioral interview questions (“Tell me about yourself,” “Why are you interested in this position?”). This is an opportunity for the company rep to also review the resume.

- Students practice answering interview questions, asking questions of employers, as well as getting used to the flow of an interview.
- Employers are encouraged to provide feedback and offer tips to the students they meet with to help them prepare for future interviews.
- Company representatives who enjoy working with emerging talent are a good fit for this experience.

What is this event?
This forum will be entirely virtual but set up in a traditional career fair-style fashion to allow employers and students to network. You must have a co-op position posted with us for the for the upcoming co-op term (Spring 2024) to participate in this event. This event will let employers get a jump start on meeting candidates available for the upcoming co-op session.
What happens during this event?
We will provide more detailed instructions closer to the event on how the virtual format will work. You will be able to have multiple representatives log-in, there will be a video component, and there will always be ways to collect data from the event.
Who from my company should attend?
Most companies choose at least two representatives, one of whom must be a technical manager. Many companies bring current or past interns or co-ops, who are great ambassadors for the company. Individuals who will most enjoy participating in this event are comfortable in a fast-paced online networking environment.

We recommend an HR professional, Team Leader, Software Engineer, Senior Data Scientist, or Security Engineer who enjoys helping students prepare for their co-op search. Participants should be familiar with the hiring process, questions frequently asked, and characteristics that are important for success.
