What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
I’m a first-year Ph.D. student, joining Northeastern in Fall 2019.
What are your research interests in a bit more detail? Is your current academic/research path what you always had in mind for yourself, or has it evolved somewhat? If so, how/why?
My research interest is natural language processing. Specifically, I focus on text summarization.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
Sometimes when we are reading some articles or documents, we want to get the important information of them without going through them, but there’s no summary provided. Automatic text summarization can help us in those situations.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting/fascinating to you? What aspects of your research (findings, angles, problems you’re solving) might surprise others?
By learning the data, I can know how people write summaries for different documents. Sometimes even for the same kind of documents, the focus of different people can vary a lot.
What are your research/career goals, going forward?
My goal is to build state-of-the-art text summarization systems for long documents.
Where did you grow up/spend the most defining years of your childhood/young adulthood?
I grew up in Guangzhou, China. It’s a large city with mountains of delicious Cantonese cuisines.
