Rasit Mete Esrefoglu is a PhD student in the Cybersecurity program at Northeastern University, advised by Professor Yunsi Fei. Rasit’s research is focused on automating detection mechanisms to handle various side-channel attacks on cryptographic functions. Rasit is interested in protecting sensitive user information from micro-architectural side-channel attacks. Prior to joining Khoury, Rasit earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degrees from Bogazici University.
What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
I am currently taking courses from different fields to gain a broader perspective on the topics that I will be working on, In the meantime, I am trying to explore the research directions for my PhD studies.
What are your research interests?
I think I’ve always found cryptology intriguing. My current research involves the attacks towards cryptographic functions, leaking the sensitive information through non-intended ways, meaning side-channels.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
Automatization of the detection mechanisms for various side-channel attacks.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting?
Regarding the fact that cloud computing is the future of computing and the underlying physical infrastructure in data centers are shared by multiple users, protecting the users’ sensitive information from microarchitectural side-channel attacks is critical. What I find interesting is that, sooner or later, a generic solution or a proper protection for these kind of attacks must be developed and be in place.
What are your research or career goals, going forward?
I would like to learn new things in as many areas as possible here at Northeastern. I believe that effective contribution nowadays requires using more than one discipline.
Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?
I spent 8 years of my most defining years in Istanbul, a city to fall in love with.
Where did you study for your undergraduate degree?
I studied at Bogazici University – Istanbul, the top college in Turkey.
