Lin Shi is the project manager for the Relational Agents Group, directed by Timothy Bickmore, at Northeastern University. Shi’s doctoral training is in communication studies with an emphasis on communication and technology. Shi’s research interests include the use of technology in a variety of communicative contexts; including identity and representation, construction of culture, public deliberation, social change and social justice, and health. Within the Relational Agents Group, Shi’s work in health communication focuses on personal health informatics, as well as conversational agents.

I research and teach HCI, PHI, and conversational agents.

What is your educational background?

I completed my PhD in Communication at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2014.

What is your research focus?

I come from a humanities and social sciences background. As a believer in incorporating issues like agency, fulfillment, identity, equity, empowerment, and social justice into interaction design, the journey so far has been challenging yet rewarding.
