Indranil Jana is a PhD student in the Computer Science program at Northeastern University’s College of Computer and Information Science, advised by Professor Alina Oprea. His research interests lie in the areas of machine learning, security and privacy, and systems and networks.

Indranil is involved in the Network and Distributed Systems Security research group. He is interested in many facets of cybersecurity, and his research deals with studying methods for mitigating cyberattacks and testing the security of new technologies. Indranil also frequently participates in security CTFs. He is passionate about spreading cyberawareness and promoting computer science education, and plans to pursue a career in academia.

Before joining Northeastern’s PhD program, Indranil earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the National Institute of Technology in Durgapur, India.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?

I joined CCIS as a PhD student in Fall 2017. I am enthusiastic about testing the security aspects of new and upcoming digital technologies. I am currently working on security analytics.

What are your research interests?

I like to study cyber attacks and mitigation techniques. I would also like to work on systems security.

What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?

I would like to contribute to the development of smart, efficient security systems for the cyberspace.

What aspect of what you do is most interesting?

I find it intriguing that however secure a system is designed to be, there is almost always a way to compromise it.

What are your research or career goals, going forward?

I am passionate about spreading cyber awareness and education, and wish to pursue a career in academia after graduation.

Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?

I grew up in Kharagpur, a lively cosmopolitan city in the state of West Bengal in India.

Where did you study for your undergraduate degree?

I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the National Institute of Technology Durgapur, India.
