Ahmet Ozcan is a PhD student in the Cybersecurity program at Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences, advised by Professor Engin Kirda. Ahmet came to Northeastern after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Middle East Technical University, a top school in Turkey. Ahmet grew up in Turkey’s southern city of Adana, a city of warm weather and flavorful cuisine.
After graduating from Middle East Technical University, Ahmet spent a short 4-month internship at Northeastern at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. Now, at Northeastern for his PhD, Ahmet’s research interests include systems and internet security, more specifically, web-operating systems and mobile security. It was not until his internship at Northeastern in the summer of 2014 that Ahmet realized he would be interested in researching internet security. Ahmet hopes to one day reach an academic level where others will benefit from his knowledge in his particular field of study.
What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
As in definition of information assurance, we are trying to improve ourselves in managing and establishing the integrity, availability, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation of information and information systems.
What are your research interests?
As a PhD at Northeastern, systems and Internet security topics, especially web-operating systems and mobile security are my research interests. During my bachelor, I did not imagine myself in this area until my internship at Northeastern. The internship gave me an insight about academic life and the importance of cybersecurity.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
I would try to solve the difference in growth rate between information or data and processing speed.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting?
As the internet evolves, information security also has to evolve–which means that day by day, there will be more things to learn.
What are your research or career goals, going forward?
My basic goal is to reach a level where others can benefit from my knowledge.
Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?
I grew up in Adana, Turkey, where it was very warm, and the food was delicious.
Where did you study for your undergraduate degree?
I graduated from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. It is the top engineering college in Turkey.
