Afsah Anwar is a postdoctoral research associate at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. His research focuses on malware threat analysis and vulnerability management, particularly on augmenting learning algorithms to defend against evolving malware threats.
Anwar joined Khoury College in 2021 after working as a data analyst at Apple and a research assistant at both the University of Central Florida and the University of Southern California. At UCF, his doctoral research explored the effective categorization and detection of malicious software within the Internet of Things; he also investigated the consistency and completeness of public vulnerability databases. At Khoury College, Anwar is advised by Alina Oprea and is affiliated with the Network and Distributed Systems Security Laboratory.
Anwar is fascinated by machine learning, malware analysis, vulnerability management, program analysis, and blockchain security. He has published research at numerous conferences—many of them international—pertaining to computer, information, and communications security, and has presented at Securecomm and ICICS. He also helped to organize CoNEXT 2019 and served as a member of the Virtual Task Force at CCS 2020.
