COM1100 Fundamentals of Computer Science - Course Policies

Attendance

You are required to attend all lectures, all recitations, and all labs. Attendance will be taken. After four unexcused absences, you will receive a warning letter from the Dean. At that point, you must talk to your professor to assess your progress. After 7 unexcused absences you will be automatically removed from the class and a grade of "W" will be entered on your transcript. It is your responsibility to clear any potential problems with your instructor, and to explain and document excusable absences.

Grading

Your final grade will be computed as follows:

Recitation Exercises 10%
Closed Labs 10%
Individual Projects20%
Quiz 10%
Midterm 15%
Final 30%
Portfolio 5%

You must have a passing average on the exams to pass the course.

Portfolio

You should keep all your work in a three ring binder (please get a big one - at least 2") with separate sections for recitation exercises, closed labs, individual projects, and exams. On the cover page you should record all your grades. I will check all portfolios during the last two weeks of classes and the reading period.

Recitation Exercises

During the recitation sessions the class will work on short programming problems. After the recitation, you are responsible for running all these programs on a computer and fixing any small problems that may have been overlooked. In addition, the recitation instructor may ask you to do extra short problems on your own. Your work should be handed in by the due date. It will be checked, but not necessarily completely graded - and will be returned to you at the next recitation session. You should include the completed work in your portfolio.

Closed Labs

During the scheduled lab session you will work on a programming project - possibly with a partner. You can ask questions about the project and consult with other groups. You are required to complete the project by the due date. If you work with a partner, you only need to hand in one project for both of you. Projects will be graded and returned to you to include in your portfolio. For joint projects, copy the instructor's comments and the grade onto your own copy of the project.

Individual Projects

The goal is to give you the opportunity to work on projects on your own - practicing what you learned in recitations and closed labs. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO DO ALL PROGRAMMING ON YOUR OWN, though you may discuss your design with your friends. If you are caught copying work of others, you will receive no grade for the project. This is critical, because you cannot pass the course without demonstrating the ability to program independently.
