SUMMARY:Seminar: Blockchain risk — a distributed-systems perspective (Boston)
DESCRIPTION:Register now\n\n\n\n\nThis seminar analyzes blockchain as a distributed-systems architecture and examines the risks that arise when these systems are deployed at scale. It focuses on how consensus design\, smart-contract execution\, cryptographic dependencies\, and network topology introduce distinct classes of failure modes\, including contract vulnerabilities\, oracle weaknesses\, and cross-chain bridge exploits. The session also considers the operational and security challenges that emerge when blockchain components interface with cloud infrastructure and enterprise systems. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlly Hoffman is a part-time lecturer in Khoury College and teaches in the MSCY program. She also serves as assistant vice president of risk and policy at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas\, where she leads governance\, technology risk\, and supervisory strategy for emerging fintech and digital asset activities. Previously\, she led the Federal Reserve System’s crypto-asset task force\, coordinating supervisory responses during periods of market stress. Hoffman is a recipient of the William Taylor Award\, the Federal Reserve’s highest supervisory honor. She holds a BS in business administration from Boston University\, an MS in cybersecurity from Northeastern University\, and a PhD in business administration from Oklahoma State University. \n\n\n\n\nRegister now

SUMMARY:Lightning Talk Series: Can AI Detect What AI Creates? The Future of Scam and Extortion Detection (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Register now\n\n\n\n\nKhoury Sparks: A Lightning Talk Series is an engaging\, high-impact 20-minute talk series that connects prospective graduate students with Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences faculty and current graduate students. Khoury Sparks showcases cutting-edge research\, applied projects\, and teaching innovations-highlighting how graduate study at Khoury is exciting\, attainable\, and deeply connected to the needs of today’s tech industry. \n\n\n\nCan AI Detect What AI Creates? The Future of Scam and Extortion Detection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Mercy Akinwunmi will share how a personal experience with the devastating impact of scam and extortion messages inspired a cybersecurity project that grew beyond a course assignment. For CY5010: Cybersecurity Principles and Practices at Northeastern\, they built a Python-based detection system that combines three approaches: a rule-based keyword scorer\, a Naive Bayes classifier\, and a Logistic Regression classifier\, all trained on more than 5\,700 real SMS messages. \n\n\n\nThe three models run simultaneously through a live graphical interface and work together to classify messages as spam\, extortion\, or safe. The project achieved a 98.69% accuracy rate with Naive Bayes\, while also revealing an important limitation: no single model detected every threat. A Bitcoin extortion message threatening to leak photos\, for example\, was correctly flagged by two models but missed entirely by Logistic Regression. \n\n\n\nThat gap led to the project’s next research question: as AI makes phishing and scam messages increasingly sophisticated and difficult for traditional keyword-based systems to detect\, can AI also become part of the solution for identifying them? \n\n\n\nAttendees will gain insight into how a hands-on cybersecurity project can evolve into a research direction\, while seeing how machine learning\, cybersecurity\, and AI intersect to address real-world threats. \n\n\n\n\nRegister now

SUMMARY:Seminar: Malicious npm Packages — Anatomy\, Detection Gaps\, and AI's Role (Boston)
DESCRIPTION:Register now\n\n\n\n\nThis seminar examines the modern software supply chain threat landscape through the lens of the JavaScript ecosystem\, drawing on analysis of real 2025 compromises including the NX Singularity\, Chalk/Debug\, and Shai-Hulud campaigns. It explores how attackers infiltrate npm through typosquatting\, dependency confusion\, and maintainer account takeovers\, and how payloads are delivered using install-time hooks\, obfuscated JavaScript\, bundled binaries\, and worm-style propagation. A central focus is the window-of-exposure problem: the gap between a malicious publish and a public advisory is the true attack surface. The session also evaluates the role of AI-assisted analysis across varying obfuscation tiers such as readable\, minified\, and fully obfuscated code\, bundled binaries and concludes with concrete\, actionable defenses practitioners can apply immediately. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Diptendu Kar\n\n\n\nDiptendu Kar is a security researcher focused on supply chain and dependency risk. He works on triaging open-source vulnerabilities\, writing detection rules\, and exploring how AI can automate tedious parts of security research. He is a Northeastern University alumnus and previously served as a part-time instructor at Khoury College\, teaching CY6120: Software Security Practices. He is especially interested in patch diffing\, vulnerable function detection\, and the use of LLMs in AppSec. He is a frequent speaker at security conferences such as OWASP and BSides. \n\n\n\n\nRegister now
