Join us on Tuesday, May 26 for a virtual Tech Talk on Statistics and Machine Learning in Biotech & Pharma with Dr. Olga Vitek! This talk will focus on the discovery mechanisms of a disease and its early diagnosis, followed by a Q&A. Registration is required.
Early diagnosis and prognosis of an outcome of a disease, and discovery of molecular mechanisms, requires pharmaceutical companies to study variation of molecular abundance in complex biological mixtures. The experimental workflows for this task are quantitative, high-throughput, and unprecedented in scope and size of the generated datasets. They present interesting statistical and machine learning challenges.
This talk will illustrate the importance of statistics and machine learning in this field using three brief examples: (1) linear mixed effects models to detect differentially abundant proteins, (2) a kernel transformation and regularization for spatially-aware segmentation of mass spectrometry-based images, and (3) an active learning experimental design for inferring protein signaling networks.
