Title: Engineer Turned Entrepreneur: A Conversation with Dr. Anh Hoang
About the Speaker
Dr. Anh Hoang with a PhD in Interdisciplinary Material Science from Vanderbilt University currently works as a technical leader at Sofregen Medical Inc. where she focuses on leveraging silk protein to develop treatments that correct for lost tissue volume, an S4B aesthetic market opportunity. She brings to this role her cross-disciplinary research experience in material science, infectious disease diagnostic, cancer research and device development. Under Dr. Hoang’s leadership, the Company developed the first injectable silk medical product for FDA clearance review, received FDA clearance for a new silk surgical scaffold, and expanded its pipeline into ENT and aesthetic applications.
“As an entrepreneur, my perspective on technology innovation has shifted from purely academic pursuits to focusing on accelerating world-changing technology from the lab bench to commercial feasibility in the most capital efficient route,” she explains.
Prior to Sofregan, Anh was a research fellow at The Center for Engineering in Medicine (CEM) at Massachusetts General Hospital. In this role, she developed on-chip technologies for the detection and molecular probing of infectious agents (tuberculosis and malaria) and rare cancer circulating tumor cells. Outside of work, Anh is a lecturer for the Biomedical Engineering Department at Tufts University and is a mentor to younger entrepreneurs on technology development.
